In 2008, the Waterford School District was the
recipient of the Safe Schools/Healthy Students (SS/HS) Grant from
The United States Departments of Education, Health and Human
Services, and Justice. The District was awarded a total of
$5,745,460 to be used over the course of four years, allowing the
District, in partnership with local public mental health, law
enforcement and juvenile justice entities, to implement
comprehensive and community-wide evidence-based strategies to:
-
Improve the safety of the school environment
-
Prevent the development of alcohol, tobacco and
other drug use
-
Promote healthy social, behavioral and emotional
supports for students
-
Provide additional mental health awareness and
services
-
Provide early childhood social and emotional
learning programs
These comprehensive programs and services are
designed to provide students, schools and families with a network
of effective services, supports and activities that help students
develop the skills and emotional resilience necessary to:
promote positive mental health; engage in pro-social
behavior; prevent violent behavior and drug use; create
schools and communities that are safe, disciplined, and drug-free
environments; and engage parents, community organizations
and social service agencies to help develop an infrastructure that
will sustain the grant components after federal funding has ended.
